Holistic Approaches to Managing Menopause and Multiple Sclerosis

Women’s health and menopause

When do women start menopause? What happens if you suffer from multiple sclerosis at the same time? There are two distinct challenges that women may face, and when they intersect, they can create a unique set of hurdles. While traditional medical treatments and symptom management strategies are important, it’s worth exploring alternative approaches to support women during this life-changing transition. In this article, we’ll delve into holistic methods, lifestyle changes, and dietary considerations that can help women with MS navigate menopause more smoothly.

Managing menopause while living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can feel overwhelming, as both conditions bring unique challenges. A holistic approach does not mean rejecting traditional medicine, but rather combining medical treatment with supportive practices that improve overall well-being. By addressing the mind, body, and spirit together, many women find that they regain a greater sense of balance and control.

Mindfulness and Stress Reduction

Menopause and MS can both be accompanied by increased stress and anxiety. Mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises are valuable tools for managing stress. These practices not only alleviate emotional turmoil but can also improve sleep quality and cognitive function, which are common concerns during both menopause and MS.

Stress can intensify both MS symptoms and menopausal discomfort. Simple daily habits such as short breathing exercises, gentle yoga flows, or even a mindful walk outdoors can calm the nervous system and reduce fatigue. Research shows that consistent stress-management practices may also have a positive effect on inflammation, which is relevant for both conditions.

Diet and Nutrition

Adopting a balanced and anti-inflammatory diet can have a profound impact on managing the symptoms of MS and menopause. Focus on whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon can help reduce inflammation, potentially easing MS symptoms. Additionally, consuming foods rich in phytoestrogens, like flaxseeds and soy, may help alleviate some menopausal symptoms.

A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods not only supports hormonal changes but also promotes brain and nerve health. Foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, berries, and flaxseed provide essential nutrients. Phytoestrogen-containing foods like soy or chickpeas may help ease menopausal symptoms naturally, while vitamin D and calcium support bone health — something that becomes more important after menopause.

Hormone Balancing

Women with MS may be concerned about the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause due to potential interactions with their condition. Alternative treatments like bio-identical hormone therapy or herbal remedies, such as black cohosh and evening primrose oil, can provide relief from menopausal symptoms without the same risks associated with traditional HRT. It’s important to consult with a knowledgeable healthcare provider before trying these options.

Exercise and Physical Activity

Regular exercise has numerous benefits for both MS and menopause. It can improve mood, boost energy levels, and support overall health. Low-impact activities like swimming, yoga, and tai chi can be particularly beneficial for women with MS. Exercise also promotes bone health, helping to counteract the increased risk of osteoporosis during menopause.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Some women find relief from menopausal symptoms through acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture can help with hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood swings. Traditional Chinese herbal remedies, tailored to an individual’s specific symptoms, may also provide relief. Always consult with a trained practitioner when considering these approaches.

Herbal Supplements

One of the best herbal supplements to help relieve symptoms is Peruvian maca. There are many studies that prove its effectiveness in balancing hormones.

Other herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort, chasteberry, and ginseng have been used to alleviate symptoms of menopause.

Additional Information

Very little is known about the effects of menopause on MS, but some women have reported worsening of MS or its symptoms. Learning safe and effective strategies can help you prepare for this changing time in your life.

Changing hormone levels during menopause can cause hot flashes (hot flashes) and affect your mood, sleep, energy levels, and bladder function. It can be difficult to distinguish from or trigger symptoms of MS.

Strategies for managing menopause symptoms include:

  • Cooling with cold showers, fans, cooling sprays, or compresses and wearing layered clothing.
  • Intake of a sufficient amount of water.
  • A nutritious diet that includes tofu, green vegetables, whole foods, legumes, and lots of fibre.
  • Reduced intake of caffeine and spicy food.
  • Exercise (within your capabilities).
  • Taking the prescribed medicine/medicines.

Holistic care is not one-size-fits-all. Every woman experiences menopause and MS differently, which is why personal experimentation, journaling of symptoms, and open communication with healthcare providers are key. The strength of holistic approaches lies in empowering women to listen to their own bodies and integrate the practices that truly make a difference in their daily lives.

While conventional medical treatments are essential for managing both menopause and multiple sclerosis, alternative approaches can complement these strategies and enhance the overall well-being of women facing this double challenge. By embracing holistic methods, making dietary adjustments, and exploring alternative therapies, women can achieve a sense of balance and empowerment as they navigate the complex intersection of menopause and MS. Always consult with healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and effectiveness of any alternative approaches you choose to pursue.

Navigating menopause while living with multiple sclerosis requires patience, self-awareness, and a supportive approach that addresses the whole person. Holistic practices such as mindful stress management, nourishing foods, gentle movement, and complementary therapies can ease the transition and improve quality of life. While these strategies are not a cure, they can empower women to feel stronger, more balanced, and better prepared for the changes ahead.

    • I’m really happy for your sister and for you! I’m glad to hear that she was successful in her recovery. I’ve always believed that we shouldn’t rely only on medicine, but we should also try alternative medicine. Especially medicinal herbs, because what else are medicines made from if not from natural herbs or already laboratory-made ingredients that already exist in medicinal herbs.
      I’ll keep this in mind.
      Thank you!
